And when he mentioned resurrection, he mentioned what follows from it and said: "And I hope" as a way of belittling himself and dismissing his deeds. This indicates that in relation to the Supreme Presence, he is incapable of giving it its true due. For indeed, hope, as Al-Hirali said in Al-Baqarah (p-54), is the attachment of the mind to something without a preceding cause - this is the end of it. Therefore, he did not prepare for it any deed: "that He may forgive" meaning: to erase and conceal.

And when Allah, glorified and exalted is He, is free from any ulterior motive, the forgiveness is solely for the portion of the servant. He said: "for me" and attributed the sin to himself, belittling himself and showing humility before his Lord. He said: "my sin" meaning: my shortcoming in not giving Him His true due. For indeed, the weak and incapable cannot reach all that is necessary in serving the Most High. And what he has done is by His decree, glorified and exalted is He, so there is no action of his in reality at all. "On the Day of Judgment" meaning: the recompense.
