Commentary
And when their vision of the heavenly and earthly signs, which necessitate submission and humility, required them to deny their failure to respond to what it calls for, let alone mock it, it had previously been emphasized to reflect on the constellations of the sky and what follows them in indications. So the estimation was: Did they not see the sky, how much We have placed in its constellations and elsewhere of beneficial and harmful signs, like rain and lightning? He then referred to what arises from that in the earth with His saying, marveling at them: ﴿Did they not see﴾.
And when they were in blindness regarding reflecting on that, He expressed the indication with the preposition of purpose, saying: ﴿to the earth﴾, meaning: regarding its vastness and the diversity of its aspects and soils. And He pointed out the abundance of what He has created from all kinds, saying: ﴿How much We have caused to grow﴾, meaning: with what We have of greatness ﴿in it﴾ after it had been dry and lifeless, with no vegetation in it ﴿of every kind﴾, meaning: type, some of which resemble others. So there remained no type suitable for them in the immediate sense except that We increased its growth ﴿noble﴾, meaning: abundant in benefits, praised in outcomes, with no foulness in it, from trees, crops, and other plants, differing in their colors, their flowers, and their lights, [and] their tastes and quantities, and their benefits and spirits - in addition to other matters that cannot be encompassed by a limit nor counted, except by the One who created them, while they are irrigated with one water; and the noble is a description of everything that is pleasing in its category and is praised, and it is the opposite of the vile.
