Commentary
Then He, the Exalted, resumed recounting their response by saying: ﴿They said﴾.
[And when it was previously established here that they affirmed for him a might that necessitates greater fear of him, their saying was good]: ﴿There is no harm﴾ meaning: there is no harm at all upon us that would result from what you have threatened us with. Rather, for us in being patient with it, if it occurs, is the greatest reward from Allah. And the comprehensive negation mentioned in this surah indicates that Pharaoh was unable to inflict punishment upon them, fulfilling what was indicated at the beginning of the story by the word 'both' and ﴿listening﴾ [Ash-Shu'ara: 15]. For the possibility from the followers of Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, would harm him and constrict his chest. And when it comes from the stories with clear expression in His saying: ﴿You two and whoever follows you are the victorious﴾ [Al-Qasas: 35], [then] they justified that by saying: ﴿Indeed﴾ meaning: by your doing this to us if Allah decrees it upon you ﴿to our Lord﴾ meaning: the One who is gracious to us alone ﴿we will return﴾ meaning: and there must be for us death. So let us abide by what our Lord has decreed of circumstances. And indeed, your judgment upon this body is for an hour of the day, then there is no judgment upon the soul except for Allah, who is worthy of rewarding us for that with the bliss of eternity. And that is the meaning of their saying, justifying what preceded.
