Commentary

And they say what they do not do. This is because they do not intend it. Rather, they were compelled to it by the art they pursued. Most of their sayings have no truths to them. Look at the ranks of al-Hariri and what he fabricated in them from tales, and what he innovated with them from astonishing matters that have no truths to them. The people of union have made it a foundation for their disbelieving innovation and a basis for their losing bargain. How evident their condition is and how clear their misguidance! This is in contrast to the Qur'an, for it contains noble meanings that are established, in strong, beautiful words that are well-structured, and in miraculous, convincing styles, and in admirable, precise compositions. There is no difficulty in any of it, so there is no desire for one with a sound nature to turn away from it. This results in the fact that no one follows them in their matter except for a misguided person like them, and no one turns away from this Qur'an except one whose nature is harsh and whose heart is dark and gloomy.
