Commentary

And when it was invalidated - by distancing it from the depths of the devils, and elevating it to the ranks of the spiritual beings, from the closest angels, who come from the Lord of the worlds - its being magic, and its being mere dreams and fabrications, He, glorified and exalted is He, denied its being poetry by His saying: "And the poets are followed by the deviators." That is, with utmost effort, [in] reciting that which is of no benefit with emphasis, due to the admiration of their sayings and actions. So they learn from them and transmit from them. "The deviators" means: the misguided ones who have strayed from the straight path to immorality, obscenity, and all corruption that leads to destruction. They are, as you see, far from the followers of Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and may Allah be pleased with them, the prostrating ones, the weeping ones, the ascetics.
