Commentary

And when the speech of Pharaoh gathered both boasting and reproach, he began with his response to the reproach because it was the latter and thus closer, and because it was more important. Then he turned to his response regarding the favor he had done, saying, reproaching him and denying him, except that he omitted the letter of denial in general in the saying and in kindness in the address: "And that is" meaning: the great disgraceful upbringing which you reminded me of, "a favor you bestow upon me" (p-23). And when its cause was his oppression of his people, he made it itself and said, substituting from it [to indicate its nullification and to inform that it - being a punishment - is more deserving to be counted as a favor]: "that you have enslaved" [meaning: your enslaving and humiliating them in that remarkable and distant manner] my people, "the Children of Israel" meaning: you made them slaves unjustly and aggressively while they are the sons of the prophets. And for their ancestor Joseph, peace be upon him, from the favor - by reviving your souls first, and freeing your necks second - what you cannot repay at all. Then what was not enough for you was that you did what no enslaved person has done, for you commanded the killing of their sons. Thus, that was the reason for my falling to you to submit from your oppression as has been explained and will come [if Allah, the Exalted, wills] fully in Surah Al-Qasas.
