Commentary
And when the warning is only for those who turn away, He commanded the opposite for their opposites, saying: ﴿And lower your wing﴾, meaning: be the utmost in gentleness. This is because when a bird wants to rise, it raises its wings. And when it wants to descend, it folds them and lowers them. So He made this a metaphor for humility ﴿for those who follow you﴾. And perhaps He avoided expressing it in the form of causation to distinguish from someone like Abu Talib, who did not believe or appeared to believe while being a hypocrite or weak in faith, sinful; and He clarified the intended meaning by saying: ﴿of the believers﴾, meaning: those for whom faith has become a firmly established attribute, whether they are from the closest or the farthest.
