Commentary
'And warn' means: with this Qur'an 'your tribe' means: your clan 'the closest' means: those nearest in kinship. And do not show favoritism to anyone, for the greatest intended purpose of it is the warning to stop the creatures from what brings about destruction from following the devils who have led them astray from their religion after they were all upright. And warning the closest ones implies warning others by extension. It diminishes the pride of the more distant ones in facing what is disliked, because he has taken the path of the closest. And indeed, he ﷺ acted upon this verse as it should be acted upon; Al-Bukhari narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that when it was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ climbed on Safa and began to call out: 'O children of Fihr! [O children of Adi!] to the clans of Quraysh until they gathered. And a man, if he could not come out, would send a messenger to see what it was. Then Abu Lahab and Quraysh came, and he said: 'Would you believe me if I told you that there are horses in the valley intending to attack you?' They said: 'Yes! We have not known you except to be truthful.' He said: 'Then I am a warner to you of a severe punishment.' Abu Lahab said: 'May you perish for the rest of the day! Is this why you gathered us?' Then the verse 'May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and may he perish' [Al-Masad: 1] was revealed. And in another narration, he ﷺ said: 'O assembly of Quraysh! Save yourselves; I cannot avail you against Allah at all. O children of Abdul Manaf! I cannot avail you against Allah at all! O Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib! I cannot avail you against Allah at all. And O Safiyyah, the aunt of the Messenger of Allah! I cannot avail you against Allah at all. And O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad! Ask me whatever you wish from my wealth; I cannot avail you against Allah at all.' And Abu Ya'la narrated the story from Al-Zubair ibn Al-Awwam, may Allah be pleased with him, that Quraysh came to him, and he warned them and admonished them. They asked him about the signs of Solomon in the wind, and David in the mountains, and Moses in the sea, and Jesus in reviving the dead, and to move the mountains, and to cause rivers to gush forth, and to turn rocks into gold. So Allah revealed to him while they were with him. When it was lifted from him, he informed them that he had been given what they asked for, but if he showed them and they disbelieved, they would be hastened to punishment. So he ﷺ chose [patience] with them so that Allah would admit them through the door of mercy.
