Commentary

Then he explained the warning by saying: ﴿Reminder﴾ meaning: a great alert regarding what is in it of salvation, and a reminder of things they know by what their innate reason has led them to, and what the insights of their hearts have guided them to. He made the warners themselves the reminder, as He, the Most High, said: ﴿Indeed, Allah has sent down to you a reminder﴾ [At-Talaq: 10] ﴿A Messenger﴾ [At-Talaq: 11], and that is an indication of their diligence in reminding until they became it.

And when the implication was: So we did not destroy a town from it except with truth, he added to it (p-105) His saying: ﴿And We were not﴾ or the waw is for the state of the noon of 'destroyed' ﴿wrongdoers﴾ meaning: in destroying anything from it because they disbelieved in Our favor, and worshipped others besides Us, after the warning was given to them, and the arguments were followed up, and the threats were continued.
