Commentary

And when all of this is a consolation for the caller ﷺ, and a warning for those who persist in denying him, and an encouragement for those who have repented from their sins, he indicated that by saying: "And indeed your Lord" meaning: the One who is gracious to you with all that elevates your status and clarifies your proof, "is the Mighty" so no one can overpower Him, nor can it be attributed in delaying a sinner to negligence or inability, "the Merciful" so He does not take action except after exceeding the limit, and despairing of the response, along with clear explanation, in complete conveying, and sufficient gentleness. He repeated the conclusion with this saying in this surah eight times, perhaps one of its secrets is the indication that mercy precedes anger. This is because among the surah that begins with the valuable Book and the perfect servant, in addition to the Greatest King, which are the mercy of the Creator to the creation, and it mentions in it [along with its precedence in warning] the people of mercy from the people of the cave (p-94) who said: "Grant us from Yourself mercy" [Aal Imran: 8] [and Musa and Al-Khidr, peace be upon them, to whom each was given from Him mercy], and Dhul-Qarnayn who was given the means to everything, so he followed a means and said: "This is a mercy from my Lord" [Al-Kahf: 98] - to the surah of mercy by the sending down of the Criterion upon His servant added to Him for warning, which announces with the attribute of might - eight surahs, each of them is the eighth of the other. The surah that follows the Criterion opened with a detailed explanation of what is in the beginning of Al-Kahf by saying: "Perhaps you will kill yourself" [Ash-Shu'ara: 3] and by mentioning what is on the earth of adornment: "Do they not see the earth, how much We have caused to grow therein of every noble pair?" [Ash-Shu'ara: 7] All of that is a reminder of what is in that from the comprehensive Book with mercy, and a warning of what is in the Quran from the distinguishing warning with might. So when that was, the attributes of might that were permitted by the Criterion were repeated, and the mercy that was stated by Al-Kahf eight times according to that number, as a reminder of this wonderful meaning, and encouragement and warning and reminder of the eight doors of mercy along with what is concluded from the stories with that of awe in the soul, and reverence in the heart, and profound comfort for the spirit. [And the attribute of might looking towards the warning by the Criterion was presented here in a confused manner along with what that situation necessitated here] and the stories were made seven as a warning from the seven doors of wrath to other secrets that thoughts cannot encompass.
