Commentary

And when the punishment of the disobedient depends on the knowledge encompassing their deeds and the ability to punish them, He, the Exalted, began the narration about him in His warning to them by saying: ﴿He said﴾ indicating that there is nothing of that except to whom He has sent it. He is (p-91) characterized by both attributes. As for him, even though he is knowledgeable, he has limited knowledge and is not capable. ﴿My Lord knows﴾ meaning: more than me ﴿what you do﴾ because He encompasses all knowledge and has complete power. He knows your deserving of punishment, the extent of what you deserve [of it], and the time of its descent. If He wills, He may punish you. As for me, I have no responsibility except for conveying the message, and I am commanded to do so. I did not frighten you with my own self nor did I claim the ability to punish you. Your request for that from me is an injustice from you combined with your injustice of denial.
