Commentary
So when the truth became clear, and the intended meaning was known, and it was strange to them, and the listener longed for their response, the narration about him was resumed. It was said to inform of their severance and that they knew there was no justification for them in that at all for their turning to immorality: ﴿They said﴾ swearing: ﴿If you do not stop﴾. [And they called him by his name out of rudeness and harshness, saying:] ﴿O Lot﴾ regarding the example of your denial of this against us.
And since he had greatness due to his prophethood and the noble actions that necessitate honoring him, and the denial of anyone who hears them that one like him should emerge, they increased in their emphasis and said: ﴿Surely you will be among the expelled﴾ meaning: [from whom] we have expelled from our land [in a terrible manner that will make you infamous among them]. This indicates that he was strange to them, and that their continuous custom was to deny anyone who opposed them. Their intention with that was for them to be the ones (p-83) who would carry out his expulsion as a humiliation to him for their relief from him. Thus, his expulsion was, however, an expulsion of honor for relief from them and salvation from their punishment by the angels of honor taking charge.
