'When' means: at the time 'their brother said to them' means: in residence in the city, not in lineage, because he is the son of my brother Ibrahim, blessings and peace be upon him. They are from the lands of the east, from the lands of Babylon. It is as if he expressed brotherhood due to his choice to dwell among them and his connection to them [by marriage], and his residence among them in their city for a long time, and many years, and his having children from their women, along with his agreement with them that he is a townsman. Then he clarified it by saying: 'Lut, do you not fear Allah?' meaning: do you not fear Allah so that you make a barrier between yourselves and His wrath.
