Commentary

And he pointed to the greatness of the date palms, especially what was among them, by specifying it with mention after its entry into the gardens by His saying: ﴿And palm trees, whose clusters are hanging﴾, meaning: what comes forth from them of fruit. Al-Zamakhshari said: Like the blade of the sword, in its interior are the spikes of the cluster. The cluster is a name for what comes out of the trunk, as it is with its stalk and its spikes.

﴿Hadeem﴾ means: generous and noble, from their saying: a hand that is hadeem if it gives generously of what it has. Its interpretation in this way encompasses the sayings of the scholars. To it returns what Abu Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) the Qazzaz said, meaning that it has been pressed - that is, some of it has been compacted with some due to its accumulation. For it cannot be like that except if it is abundant and closely stacked, with no gaps between it, and delicate, soft, fragrant, from the pressing by movement. It is the fullness of the belly and the softness of the side; and the hadeem is what has looseness in it. Hadeem also means: the fragrant, and the mahdoomah is a fragrance mixed with musk and frankincense. Al-Razi said in the Luminaries: Or it is ripe, tender, soft, and crumbling when touched, or it digests food. All of this returns to its delicateness.
