Commentary

And when it is the case that one who dies should not deny death by action or by saying, He said: ﴿And you take for yourselves fortresses﴾ meaning: things [by taking water, or palaces built and fortresses] that you make, they are in their construction such that they consume time with strength and stability. No one builds them except one whose condition is that of one hoping for eternity. Therefore, He said: ﴿Perhaps you will live forever﴾, which is the meaning of what is in Al-Bukhari from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, in its interpretation as if you are.
