Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, completed what He mentioned of their sayings arising from their misguidance, He turned to His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, comforting him and said: "Look." Then He indicated astonishment at them by saying: "How did they strike?" He prioritized what deserved attention by saying: "For you are the examples." They made you, at times, like them in needing sustenance, and at other times, similar to them in seeking means to attain profits and benefits, through subtle strategies and the nature of intellect. And at times, they are overwhelmed in intellect, mixed in temperament, bringing forth what no rational person would accept. And at times, they are sorcerers, bringing forth what their powers cannot achieve, and their thoughts are bewildered in it. "So they went astray," meaning from all paths of justice and all aspects of expression because of that. They found no saying to settle upon and distanced themselves greatly. "So they cannot" in the present or in the future, due to this misguidance, "a way," meaning the path of the paths leading to what deserves to be sought. Rather, they are in desolate wildernesses and deadly deserts.
