And when the matter of the Most Merciful was established, the matter of the Most Merciful appeared, and what His servants have of the supplication which is humility and sincerity. He concluded their good attributes with the supplication that truly indicates sincerity in humility. He mentioned the goodness of their reward and the noble outcome for them. He commanded the warner to say to the servants of the devil who were arrogant about prostrating to the Most Merciful and about acknowledging and believing, to return from disobedience, and for the believers to increase in obedience and faith: 'Indeed, your Lord does not regard those who do not call upon Him. So whoever abandons His supplication, let him await the eternal punishment.' He said: 'Say, what does it matter to you?' meaning, what does it regard (p-438) and concern, and makes you among those who will be filled in the place of the gathering now - on the condition that 'what' is negating. 'With you,' meaning, O disbelievers. 'My Lord,' meaning, the Benefactor to me and to you with His mercy, the one who has specifically granted me goodness with His mercy. And He has specifically mentioned it in relation to His acknowledgment of them. 'If it were not for your supplication,' meaning, your calling upon Him at the time of your hardships which you hasten to in humility to Him so that He may save you. If you do that, He will rescue you from what you are in, treating you like one who cares for a person and regards him and takes care of him. If it were not for His calling you to worship Him as a mercy for you to purify yourselves and arrange your deeds and not be fuel for the Fire. 'Indeed, you have denied,' meaning, that resulted from your bad nature against what should have been for you of gratitude and goodness by following up the rescue and confirming and associating denial with the Most Merciful after His mercy upon you with the clarification along with your weakness and inability. You abandoned that supplication to Him and worshipped idols, and you claimed for Him a child and other falsehoods. Or what does He regard you as anything of regard if it were not for your supplication to Him at the time of hardships? He regards you for His sake as a type of regard, and it is the duration that He has set for you in this world, nothing else, because you have denied. Or what would He do with you if it were not for His calling you to His obedience, because you have denied? You were worse than the animals. So He called you, and as a result of His calling you, you surprised the caller with denial. The result is that there is now (p-439) nothing in you that is suitable for Him to regard you for except the supplication, because you are deniers. And I only said: 'now' because 'what' does not enter except upon the present tense with the meaning of the state, the opposite of 'no.' 'So surely,' meaning, as a result of your denial, He will reward you for that. However, with His strength, power, and choice, He does not hasten you. Rather, 'the reward for this denial will be at the end of what He has set for you of the appointed times. And everything distant to you is near to Him, and everything coming is near. So prepare yourselves and be ready for that day. 'Compulsory,' meaning, it is necessary for you with a great necessity that cannot be escaped from you in any way. And this is a warning about their weakness, inability, humiliation, and subjugation, because the compelled can only be like that. So He captured them on the day of Badr from the individuals of this threat. The end of the surah has aligned with its beginning in warning of the criterion for those who denied the truth of the Most Merciful - and Allah is the Guardian of success in faith.
