And when he mentioned their description by which they excelled, he referred to the description of the ignorant by which they fell short. He said: ﴿And those who, when reminded﴾ meaning they are reminded by others, whoever they may be, because they recognize the truth by itself, not by its speaker. ﴿By the signs of their Lord﴾ meaning that He has guided them to remember His kindness towards them in the goodness of His upbringing for them, by reflecting on the visible and audible signs. ﴿They do not fall﴾ meaning they do not act like the fallen who are arrogant ﴿upon it﴾, covering it. Then he added to clarify their turning away and their rejection of it, saying, emphasizing that the negated is the falling, not the one who causes it, and that is falling down; rather, it exists and is not negated in the form of hearing and sight: ﴿Deaf and blind﴾ meaning as the hypocrites and disbelievers act in approaching it by hearing and reflection, and turning away from it is a covering for what they know of its truth and a concealment of what they have seen of its light, an act of one who neither hears nor sees, as previously mentioned about Abu Jahl, Abu Sufyan, and Al-Akhnas ibn Shariq. And this is a description of the servants of the Most Merciful by acting in opposition to this, meaning that they fall down upon hearing it and weep over it, falling like a listener who benefits from his hearing, a seer who benefits from his sight and insight, prostrating and weeping as previously mentioned in the beginning of their descriptions, even if they do not reach the highest degrees of insight - as indicated by the exaggeration in the increase of the noon in the plural of blindness.
