Commentary
And when he mentioned what is between them and the creation in terms of saying and action, and the predominant aspect of that is to be in public during the day, he mentioned what is between them and their Creator in that it is in private at night. He mentioned these conjunctions that are attributes with the conjunction 'and', as a reminder that each one of them is independent in its purpose due to the great danger of it and the significant effect of it. He said: 'And those who spend the night...' from 'baytutah': that the night overtakes you whether you sleep or do not sleep, and it is the opposite of being in the light; and it indicates specificity by presenting 'for their Lord', meaning the One who is gracious to them with His mercy. They spend the night in worship as a mercy for themselves and as gratitude for His grace.
And when prostration is the most significant pillar of prayer in bringing one closer to Allah, due to it being the ultimate humility, while it is what the ignorant have rejected, he prioritized it for that reason and he knows from the very beginning that standing in prayer is important. He said: 'Prostrating' and followed it with what is similar in difficulty to emphasize that prostration in its essence refines the actions of prayer. He said: 'and standing', meaning they did not act like the ignorant who are arrogant about prostration, but rather they were - as Al-Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said: their days in humility and their nights in submission.
