And when they threw him with these words, in which they were in a state of confusion, and although they were evidently flawed to anyone with the slightest insight, some of the Arabs accepted them to some extent. This was despite their broad intellects and sound thoughts, due to weak doubts that were enabled by imitation and a strong familiarity with what they had been upon for a long time. He, glorified and exalted is He, commanded him to respond to them, beginning with saying: ﴿Say﴾, indicating the invalidity of what they said and threatening them: ﴿He has sent it down﴾, meaning the Qur'an, from the treasures of His knowledge, contrary to all that you have fabricated. ﴿He knows the secret﴾, meaning all of it; nothing is hidden from Him of it, so how about the open! ﴿In the heavens and the earth﴾, so He answers you about all that you have fabricated against me and in His Book, whether you conceal it or not. He clarifies all that the servants need in both abodes, in a speech that is miraculous in wording and meaning, in a way that every person of understanding realizes that no one says it except a Knower of all information, and none encompasses all information except Him. This is very evident from His informing of the past with what the scholars of the past confirm, and His judgment on the future with what will be a necessary strike, and His revealing of the hidden and His mastery over all that He says. His custom, glorified and exalted is He, has been to take vengeance on whoever lies against Him by first exposing his lie, then taking him, and then punishing him with the greatest punishment. So you will see who does that, and truly, the truth of it has become clear to me from the three matters that have occurred.

And when it was known that the One who knows everything is capable of everything, as was previously established in Surah Ta-Ha, and that the custom is that whoever knows the disdain of others towards him and is capable of it hastens to take them, the one who seemed to ask: So why does He not destroy the disbelievers? was answered by His saying, encouraging them to repent, indicating His power in concealing and bestowing, and clarifying the benefit of sending this reminder to them as a return from what they have persisted in for long ages of disbelief and various sins: ﴿Indeed, He was﴾ eternally and forever ﴿Forgiving﴾, meaning He is one who covers what He wills of the sins of His servants, by not reproaching them for it nor holding them accountable for it. ﴿Merciful﴾ towards them in bestowing upon them after their creation, with their provision and the formation of intellects within them, and the establishment of evidence for them, and sending the messengers and sending down the Books among them, and His delaying them in their disbelief, meaning there is no reason for His delaying them and admonishing them with what He has sent down to them except His mercy and forgiveness and His knowledge that His Book is a rectification for their conditions in both abodes.
