Commentary
And when the denial of the response from desire was negated forcefully by agency, the denial of the response was negated willingly by condemning misguidance. He mentioned the impediment to it by saying, equivalent to what preceded it, denying its accounting, not by being the accountant, or denying being the accountant, along with what he has of sound intellect and sound opinion. And 'do you think' is conjoined to 'you are': 'Or do you think that most of them' meaning these who are called 'hear' meaning the hearing of one who is admonished, even if he is not rational like the animals, 'or they understand' what they see, even if they do not have hearing, until he hopes for their return by their choice without compulsion.
And when this question is beneficial for denial, he affirmed what he implied by saying: 'Indeed, they are nothing but like cattle' meaning in the absence of intellect due to their lack of benefit from it, 'rather they are more astray' meaning than it, 'in their way' because they do not refrain from what they hear while it refrains, nor do they thank the benefactor, who is their ally, nor do they distance themselves from the wrongdoer, who is their enemy, nor do they desire reward, nor do they fear punishment. This is because we have veiled the suns of their intellects with the shadows of the towering mountains from their misguidance. If they had believed, those veils would have been lifted, and the lights of faith would have shone, so they would have seen the wonders of meanings, and the secrets would have been revealed to them.
'Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them by their faith' [Yunus: 9]. Just as a person - even if he is sighted - cannot distinguish between tangible things unless the light of the sun shines upon them, likewise a person - even if he is rational and insightful - cannot perceive the known meanings as they are unless the light of faith shines upon them. This is because insight is the eye of the soul just as sight is the eye of the body. And when it is known that they hear and understand, and that what is denied is merely their benefit from that, it is a matter of wonder that they turn away from that. So He, glorified and exalted is He, followed it with His action in tangible matters as an example for the immaterial matters. And because His action in the unseen illuminates it if He wills with the sun of knowledge just as His action in the apparent does, it is a proof of their lack of benefit from what He has given them.
