4The disbelievers said, “This is nothing but a lie he (the messenger) has fabricated and some other people have helped him in it.” Thus they came up with sheer injustice and falsehood.

Commentary

And when He described the One who sent down the Criterion with that which no one other than Him has knowledge of its affairs, it became clear by that the miracle of the revealed text, which is this Qur'an, and that it alone is the Criterion. He expressed astonishment at the state of those who deny it, saying in a place: And they said: ﴿And those who disbelieved said﴾, manifesting the description that led them to this saying, which is the concealment of what has appeared to them and to others like the sun and their effort in hiding it: ﴿Indeed﴾ meaning what ﴿this﴾ meaning the Qur'an ﴿is nothing but a fabrication﴾ meaning a lie that is diverted from its apparent meaning and essence, which is the worst of lies ﴿he has invented﴾ meaning this warner has deliberately lied. Thus, their saying became a point of astonishment due to its apparent flaw.

And when man is naturally inclined to multiply even the slightest of virtues and loves for them to be attributed to him and not to anyone else, their saying became more astonishing and revealed their flaw: ﴿And he was aided﴾ meaning Muhammad ﴿by﴾ meaning the Qur'an ﴿a people﴾ meaning those of capability who honored him with what they are honored by over others; and they increased their distance by saying: ﴿Others﴾ meaning from outside his people. It was said: They meant the Jews, and it was said: Others among those in their land from the slaves, Christians, and others. Therefore, it resulted in His saying, exalted is He: ﴿Indeed, they have come﴾ meaning the disbelievers in that ﴿with falsehood﴾ by placing the lie upon what is more truthful than it and more just ﴿and falsehood﴾ meaning a deviation with great coarseness from the straight path in relation to the most truthful of people and the purest in character, and the most upright in way, to these vile things that the lowest of people would not accept for themselves. For indeed, while it is despicable in itself, it is guaranteed to be scandalous; Ibn Jarir said: The essence of falsehood is the embellishment of falsehood and the interpretation of words.
