Commentary
And when the estimation was: what they brought forth in this objection has certainly been invalidated, he followed it with his saying: ﴿And they do not come to you﴾ meaning the polytheists ﴿with an example﴾ meaning with an objection to invalidate your matter, which they imagine for the minds of the weak by what they strive to embellish, improve, and refine until it becomes for them in the utmost beauty and elegance, both in wording and meaning ﴿Except that we come to you﴾ meaning in response to it ﴿with the truth﴾ and from the definite article indicating completeness, it is known that what is meant by it is the established truth that nothing is more established than it, so what they brought forth burdens them with its invalidation, and after that veil, it exposes a disgrace that embarrasses both the speaker and the listener who accepts it.
And when the estimation in essence was: with something more truthful than it, and he only expressed it with the truth, so that it would not be understood that what they bring forth has any reality in truth, he followed it with his saying: ﴿And better﴾ meaning than their like ﴿in explanation﴾ meaning a clarification of what has covered the understanding from that which they imagined and claimed that they clarified through it a face of the objections, so most of the listeners affirmed its goodness.
