Commentary
And when he regretted having distanced himself from the Messenger, he lamented having befriended another by saying: "Oh, woe to me!" That is, oh, my destruction, for I have no companion other than him, as he is not present with me besides him. And when he intended something impossible, he expressed it with his words and said: "If only I had not taken so-and-so," meaning the one who misled him - he names him by his name, yet he used a metaphor for him, and glorified and exalted is He, does not fear from being distanced, nor does He need to be secretive, intending for the generality, even though the verse was revealed concerning a specific person. "Khalil" means a friend with whom I agree in his actions, due to what I know of the bad consequences of them.
