Commentary

And when their situation was that they turned away from the most noble of creation who guides them to every good, and accompanied others who lead them to every evil, He clarified the difficulty of that day which indeed necessitated their boldness in denying it due to their extreme regret over this action. So He said: ﴿And on the Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands﴾, meaning due to his excessive sorrow for what he sees in it of horrors, ﴿saying﴾, meaning he renews in every moment his saying: ﴿Oh, I wish I had taken﴾, meaning I forced myself and made it a duty to take in this world ﴿a path with the Messenger﴾, meaning one action of the actions to which he called me, and I obeyed him in some obedience, for what has been revealed to me on this day that whoever obeyed him even for a moment, happiness would be attained for him in proportion to it. And biting the hand and fingers and burning the teeth and similar actions are a metaphor for anger and regret, as they are among its consequences. So the consequence is mentioned as an indication of the consequence, and the speech rises in the level of eloquence to a point where the listener finds within himself from the terror and admiration what he does not find in the one referred to.
