Commentary
And when that day is a cause for the unveiling of matters and the knowledge that there is no ownership except for Him, glorified and exalted is He, because no one else judges in it, He said: ﴿The sovereignty on that day﴾, meaning the day when the sky will be split with clouds; then He described the sovereignty by saying: ﴿The truth﴾, meaning the meaning that is established with a permanence that cannot be removed; then He informed about it by saying: ﴿For the Most Merciful﴾, meaning the one whose mercy is general in both abodes. From the generality of His mercy and the truth of His sovereignty is that He brings joy to the hearts of the people of His love by punishing the people of His enmity, those who opposed them in their neglect of the truth by following falsehood. If it were not for His attribute of mercy, no one would enter Paradise. The meaning of the composition is that the ownership of others on that day is only by the name that was previously given to them in this world, merely a designation for them, with no ruling for them at all, neither in essence nor in appearance, as it was in this world. ﴿And it was﴾, meaning that day when the angels appear, whom the disbelievers sought to see them ﴿A day of difficulty for the disbelievers﴾, meaning only ﴿Severe in difficulty and hardship﴾.
