20We did not send any messengers before you (O prophet,) but all of them used to eat food and walk in the markets. And We have made some of you a test for some others. Would you observe patience? And your Lord is Ever-seeing.

Commentary

And when He, glorified is He, invalidated what they accused His Messenger of, blessings and peace be upon him, and mentioned what He has prepared for them and for him and for his followers, and denied what they claimed about their deities, He concluded with the punishment of the wrongdoers. He mentioned what they wronged in their saying, "What is this Messenger?" [Al-Furqan: 7] and similar statements. He clarified that what they made of that a blemish against him is His, glorified is He, tradition with the messengers before him as an example for their human kind. He followed it with His secret and said, as an addition in (p-365) consolation, comfort, and emulation: "And We did not send" with what we have of greatness. And when the intended meaning was general, He showed it from the neighbor and said: "Before you" meaning, O Muhammad, one of the messengers except that their condition is "Indeed, they eat food" like we eat and others among the human beings eat, "and they walk in the markets" as you do and they do, meaning except that their condition is eating and walking to seek livelihood like the condition of other human beings. And they know that from what they have heard of their news. And this is a confirmation from Allah, the Exalted, for they do not deny him, blessings and peace be upon him, nor do they believe there is a deficiency in him. And it is a refutation of their argument by what they said of that, and an establishment of the proof against their stubbornness. And they only say it and similar statements due to what has preceded of their firm disbelief in the Hour in their souls. "And We made" meaning by giving and withholding with what we have of greatness, "some of you a trial for others" by making this a prophet and we have distinguished him with the message, and this one a king and we have distinguished him with the world, and this one poor and we have deprived him of the world, so that what we know of each in obedience and disobedience in the unseen world may appear to the people in the witnessed world. So we test the poor with his patience over what he has been deprived of from what we have given the rich or his despair, and the kings and those in their meaning from the nobles with their patience over what the Messenger has been given of honor and nearness to Allah to what they cannot attain while they are in greatness. For that reason, I did not give (p-366) My Messenger the world, and I made him one who chooses servitude and sufficiency by seeking livelihood in the markets, to test you in obedience to him exclusively. For if I had given him the world, and made him one who chooses kingship, most would hasten to follow him out of greed for the world. And this is the meaning of "Will you be patient?" for it is the reason for what preceded, meaning so that we may know with the knowledge of witnessing whether you will be patient in what we have tested you with or not, as we knew it with the knowledge of the unseen, so that the proof may be established against you in the course of your customs. And in it, with the reason, there is a profound warning for whoever reflects, and it is permissible that the questioning is a commencement of the warning.

And when the test might suggest a deficiency in knowledge, and His kindness, glorified and exalted is He, to all of creation is without His kindness to their master and their eye, and their salvation and their adornment: Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, and He is the most knowledgeable of them in His glorification and magnification. The trial of them by making him a prophet and a servant, while he is in the utmost honor, might have led them to think it was a humiliation. He negated what might suggest to them any questioning or testing regarding Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and regarding His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him. So He said, turning the address to him: "And your Lord was..." meaning the One who is kind to you with a kindness He has not shown to anyone else besides you, especially by making you a prophet and a servant. "Seeing" (p-367) of everything, for He is knowledgeable of man before the test; that knowledge did not benefit him in any knowledge that he did not have. And He, glorified and exalted is He, places matters in their proper places, even if it is seen otherwise. Therefore, it is incumbent upon everyone to submit to Him in all matters, for it leads to great good. And to reflect on His words and actions with good compliance and reception, for it leads to abundant knowledge. And what He intended by testing you with them and testing them with you in this great harm was nothing but to elevate your status and to lower their affair. "And you will surely know its news after a time" [Sad: 88].
