Commentary
And when he described their encounter with it, he described their being thrown into it by saying: "And when they are thrown" meaning they are cast down in a manner of humiliation. So they are made to meet the least of matters from it, meaning the Fire, in a "place". And he described it by saying: "narrow" as an increase in its horror. "Bound together" in the least of matters, meaning their hands to their necks in chains, or ropes of palm fiber, or with those who misled them from the devils. And "binding" is the gathering of something to something in a bond, which is the rope. "They will call there" meaning in that detestable place far from comfort: "for destruction" meaning a great ruin, so they will say: O destruction! Because there is no one to call upon them other than it, and there is no one present among them except it. Ibn Jarir said: The origin of "thabr" in the speech of the Arabs is turning away from something. So the meaning then is: They called for their turning away from Paradise to the Fire, which they caused by their turning away from faith to disbelief. So they had no companion except their recalling that in regret and remorse. And they were answered in a manner of resumption by His saying, the Exalted.
