Commentary
And the fifth [testimony] is that the anger of Allah, to whom belongs all command, has no equal. It is more severe than the curse, which is expulsion, because it may occur for reasons other than anger. The reason for the severity of it is the encouragement to acknowledge the truth, as it supports the husband from the evidence that he does not bear the disgrace of his family, which entails his own disgrace, except that he is truthful. This is because it is the source of corruption, the veil that is torn, and it mixes the lineages. If it is a firm existence from the truthful ones, meaning in what he accused her of; Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir and others from Ibn Abbas and others, may Allah be pleased with them, that Hilal ibn Umayyah, may Allah be pleased with him, accused his wife before the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, of Sharik ibn Sahm, may Allah be pleased with him. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'The evidence, or else a punishment upon you.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! If one of us sees a man with his wife, should he go out seeking evidence?' The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, kept saying: 'The evidence, or else a punishment upon you.' Hilal said: 'By the One who sent you with the truth! I am truthful, and may Allah send down what clears my back from the punishment.' Then Gabriel, peace be upon him, descended and revealed to him: 'And those who accuse their wives' [Qur'an 24:6]. He recited until he reached: 'If he is from the truthful ones.' Then the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, left and sent for them. Hilal came and testified, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Indeed, Allah knows that one of you is lying, so is there any of you who will repent?' Then she stood and testified. When she reached the fifth [testimony], they stopped her and said: 'This is obligatory.' She hesitated and drew back until we thought she would return. Then she said: 'I will not disgrace my people today.' So she proceeded, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'Look at her; if she comes with eyes darkened, with ample buttocks, and with shapely calves, then it is for Sharik ibn Sahm.' She came with him just like that, and the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: 'If it were not for what has passed from the Book of Allah, there would have been a matter between me and her.' Al-Bukhari also narrated from Sahl ibn Sa'd, may Allah be pleased with him, that the reason for its revelation is a story similar to this regarding 'Uwaymir. It has been established that a single verse may have multiple causes, whether together or separate.
