Commentary
And when the disbelievers were in a position of great number and strength, the situation was worthy of emphasizing the meaning of empowerment. This is a response to a question as if he said: Is that possible? So he said: ﴿Do not think﴾, meaning, O you who are being addressed, ﴿those who disbelieved﴾, even if their number exceeds the count and their greatness surpasses the limit. For that calculation is a weakness of intellect, because the king is not overwhelmed by those under his domination. It may also be addressed to the Prophet ﷺ for the sake of further affirmation, because the fulfillment of the promise is according to the greatness of the one being addressed. ﴿Overcoming﴾ our allies ﴿in the earth﴾, for they are certainly taken. ﴿And their abode﴾, meaning, their dwelling and residence after being taken, ﴿is the Fire﴾. And since the dwelling of a thing does not occur except after it has become that way, he said: ﴿And how evil is the destination!﴾ Its destination! So how if it is in the form of dwelling.
