And when he alerted them to their deception, he indicated the lack of being deceived by their faith. He pointed to the acceptance of the testimony of their claim. He commanded to encourage them and to frighten them, indicating the avoidance of their punishment. He said: "Say, obey Allah" meaning, O those who have acknowledged faith, "and obey the Messenger" meaning, he who has the absolute message, outwardly and inwardly, not like the hypocrites. "But if you turn away" meaning, if there exists among you turning away from that in disobedience to him, even in the slightest forms of turning away - as indicated by the omission of the 'ta', you will go astray and will not harm except yourselves. This is the meaning of his saying: "For upon the Messenger is only the duty of clear delivery" meaning, from the conveying of what he has been entrusted with, just as if one carries something, he must carry it for him or carry something heavier than it. "And upon you is what you have been entrusted with" of acceptance, and it is not upon him to compel you to guidance; and he made clear by saying: "And if you obey him" meaning, by turning to all that he commands you, "you will be guided" meaning, to all good, that there is no guidance for them without following him. Abdullah ibn Imam Ahmad narrated in the additions of the Musnad from Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said on the pulpit: "Whoever does not thank the little has not thanked the much, and whoever does not thank the people has not thanked Allah. And speaking of the blessings of Allah is gratitude, and leaving it is disbelief. And the community is mercy, and division is punishment." Abu Umamah Al-Bahili, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "You must stick to the greater group!" Then a man said: "What is the greater group?" Abu Umamah called out this verse in Surah Al-Nur: "But if they turn away, then upon the Messenger is only the duty of clear delivery, and upon you is what you have been entrusted with."

And when what he was entrusted with was ambiguous, he clarified it by saying: "And there is no blame upon the Messenger" meaning, from the side of others, "except clear delivery" meaning, the conveying that is achieved without doubt, either by clarification alone or combined with the sword and what is less than it from types of deterrents.
