Commentary
And when glorified and exalted is He arranged success upon this specific type of obedience, He followed it with the general obedience and said: ﴿And whoever obeys Allah﴾ meaning the One who has all authority ﴿and His Messenger﴾ meaning in submitting to the decree and otherwise in what pleases him and displeases him from all apparent actions ﴿and fears Allah﴾ meaning the One who has majesty and honor, with his heart for what has passed of his sins, so that it carries him to every good, just as the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, when one of them fell short, would come to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, and say: Purify me, and one of them is instructed to return and does not return. In his purification is the coming to himself. This occurred for their men and women - may Allah be pleased with them all - and sometimes according to their methodology, and may He gather us in their group. ﴿And let him fear Allah﴾ meaning Allah in what he faces by making a barrier between him and what angers Him, by leaving the permissible out of piety.
And when He specified the pronouns indicating the scarcity of the obedient, He gathered them so that it would not be thought that he is one, and said: ﴿So they are﴾ those of high rank ﴿the successful﴾ with eternal ownership, and there is no success for others.
