Commentary
And when the reason for their action was this, after they had shown obedience, it was appropriate to ask about it. So Allah, the Most High, said, clarifying it after alerting to what it might entail of situations: "Is there a disease in their hearts?" This means a type of corruption from the original nature that leads them to misguidance. "Or do they doubt?" Because a suspicion has arisen that has blinded them from the path. "Or is there no flaw in them, neither original nor incidental?" Rather, the flaw is in the ruler; they fear that Allah, the All-Sufficient, will be unjust to them, for He has everything against them by establishing a ruling that is unjust, and He is free from ulterior motives. "And His Messenger," who does not speak out of desire, by imposing a deviant matter, and his infallibility from impurities has been established.
And when none of that was the case, He turned away from it and said: "Rather, those are the distant, the hated. They are specifically the wrongdoers, meaning those who are complete in wrongdoing, because their hearts are sealed with disease and doubt, not that there is only one type of it in them. And they do not fear injustice; rather, it is what they desire when the truth is against them.
