Commentary
And when he first mentioned the conditions of the two horizons as a proof of His oneness, and separated from it the high effects, he mentioned what irrigates the earth. He omitted mentioning what arises from it of plants for the sake of knowledge of it. He mentioned the conditions of what is formed by it from animals as a clear proof of resurrection, and a compelling argument against those who deny it. He said: ﴿And Allah﴾, meaning the One who has complete knowledge and comprehensive power, ﴿created every living creature﴾, meaning from what has been previously mentioned that glorifies Him.
And when he mentioned types of animals, he used an indefinite form contrary to what is in the Prophets, saying: ﴿from water﴾, meaning a gushing water which is the greatest part of its substance, just as He created plants from water that is “gushing” as well. He distinguished between them while all are from the gushing water (p-294) in which there is no distinction. ﴿So among them﴾, meaning the living creatures.
And when it was in the context of glorification, and since He has given every soul the understanding by which it knows its benefits and harms, he expressed the whole by the tool of one who understands, even if they differ in discernment. He said: ﴿Who walks on his belly﴾, meaning without legs; and he presented this because it is more indicative of power, and he called it walking metaphorically and by analogy. ﴿And among them are those who walk on two legs﴾, meaning there is nothing other than this. ﴿And among them are those who walk on four﴾, meaning with hands and legs. In this, there is a hint at those who walk on more than that, and to this he referred by saying: ﴿Allah creates﴾. He expressed with the name of majesty to indicate the extent of greatness; and he said: ﴿What He wills﴾ as an indication that He did it by His power and choice, and there is no entry for anything other than that in it except by the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
And when these proofs were looking towards resurrection, he completed the view, and since they were denying it, he affirmed his statement: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾, meaning the One who has absolute perfection, ﴿is capable of all things﴾ of that and other than it.
