Commentary
Then he increased in the terror by saying: ﴿On that Day﴾ meaning when these limbs will testify against them. ﴿Allah will fully repay them﴾ meaning the One who encompasses all things with knowledge and power, and to Him belongs all perfection. ﴿Their religion﴾ meaning their recompense. ﴿The truth﴾ meaning that which is evident to everyone among the people of that great assembly that they deserve it, so no one can find any way to dispute it. ﴿And they will know﴾ meaning at that time, due to the cessation of causes and the lifting of every veil. ﴿That Allah﴾ meaning the One who has absolute greatness, so there is no equal to Him. ﴿He﴾ meaning alone. ﴿The truth﴾ meaning His command is established, so there is no command for anyone besides Him.
﴿The clear﴾ that which is clearer than His affair in His divinity, knowledge, power, and uniqueness in all attributes of perfection, and His being free from all attributes of deficiency. They will regret (p-243) for what they did in the world that detracted from their vigilance and upon which negligence fell. Ibn Kathir said: And the Mothers of the Believers are more deserving of being included in this than any other chaste woman, especially the one for whom the revelation was the reason, which is Aisha, the daughter of the Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with both of them. The scholars unanimously agreed that whoever insults her after this and accuses her of what he accused her of after this which is mentioned in this verse, then he is a disbeliever because he is opposing the Qur'an. As for the rest of the Mothers of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with them, there are two sayings, the more correct of them is that they are like her, and Allah knows best - this has ended.
It has been known from these verses and what preceded them from the beginning of the Surah and what followed them to its end that Allah, the Exalted, has not emphasized any of the sins as He emphasized the story of the slander, nor has He threatened in anything as He threatened in it. He confirmed, and made it ugly, and reproached and scolded, all of this to show the honor of His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, and in anger for him, and to glorify his sanctity and to protect his veil.
