Commentary
﴿And let not﴾ meaning to swear, exaggerating in the oath. ﴿Those of virtue among you﴾ those whom I have made worthy of doing good to others by what I have given them of knowledge and good morals. ﴿And the abundance﴾ meaning by what I have granted them in their worldly affairs.
And since the context and the preceding and following verses clarify the intended meaning, there was no need to mention the negation tool, so He said: ﴿That they should give﴾. Then He mentioned the attributes that necessitate kindness, saying: ﴿The relatives﴾ and enumerated them with the conjunction to increase their number and to magnify their importance, indicating that one of these attributes is sufficient for kindness. So how about if they are combined! He said, glorified and exalted is He: ﴿And the poor﴾ meaning those who do not find what suffices them, even if they do not have kinship. ﴿And the emigrants﴾ from their families, homes, and wealth ﴿In the way of Allah﴾ meaning that which encompasses the creatures with His generosity due to His encompassing majesty and honor, even if they are devoid of the first two descriptions. For these attributes indicate that they are among those whom Allah has purified. And their enumeration as a cause for forgiveness is evidence that the one who is purified, though not infallible, may slip, and the purification may reach him through repentance, and he returns as he was. And the three may refer to one described, as the reason for its revelation is [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Mistaḥ] may Allah be pleased with him. Thus, the conjunction is for the establishment in each description of them.
And since the prohibition against that is not explicit in the forgiveness, and the estimation is: let them give to them, He added to it, stating the intended meaning with His saying: ﴿And let them forgive﴾ meaning about their slips by erasing them and covering them with what they conceal from them of the veils of forbearance until no trace remains. And since erasure does not negate remembrance, He said: ﴿And let them overlook﴾ meaning to turn away from it entirely and fundamentally, so that it does not cross their minds to yield that kindness, and among them is the one who is forgiving, which is the generous one.
And since the pleasure of addressing makes one forget all reproach, He, glorified and exalted is He, approached with His grace, bounty, and generosity upon the people of virtue, encouraging them to do for others what they love to be done for them, warning that He would not be harsh with them if they were harsh. He said: ﴿Do you not love﴾ meaning, O people of virtue, ﴿that Allah should forgive﴾ meaning the Most Great King ﴿you﴾ meaning what you have fallen short of in His right. And the reason for its revelation, as in the authentic narration from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, is that her father, may Allah be pleased with him, swore after Allah had cleared Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that he would not spend on [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Mistaḥ], the son of his sister, because he had spoken about the people of slander. And in the interpretation of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Al-Asbahani] from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, a group of the companions, including Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them, swore that they would not give charity to a man who had spoken about something from the slander, and they would not benefit him, so Allah revealed this verse.
And what a testimony of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, for the truthful one that he is among the people of virtue! How great is the honor of it! And how high is the nobility and pride of it! Especially since he was supported by Allah, may Allah be pleased with him, in forgiving those who slandered the fruit of his heart and the essence of his being, which is the truthful one, the wife of the Seal of the Messengers, and the best of all creation. And he swore that he would never cease to provide for her. So, how beautiful are the morals of Allah! And how pure and exalted are her attributes! And how noble and radiant are they.
And when the answer was decisive as the truthful one, may Allah be pleased with him, answered: 'Yes, by Allah! We love that Allah forgives us.' It was as if it was said: 'Forgive those who have wronged you.' For Allah is a just judge, rewarding them for their wrongdoings against you if He wills. And Allah is All-Knowing and Appreciative, He appreciates what you have done for them. He added to it His saying: 'And Allah,' meaning with His complete power and comprehensive knowledge, 'is Forgiving and Merciful.' This is one of His attributes, if He wills, He forgives your sins by erasing them so that no trace remains, and He has mercy upon you after erasing them with His grace upon you, just as you have done with them. For indeed, the reward is of the same kind as the deed.
