And when all of this is an admonition for them and a means of reform, it is translated by His saying: ﴿Allah admonishes you﴾ meaning He softens your hearts, He who possesses all perfection, and He delays with His mercy, and does not delay with His wisdom and knowledge, by warning in a manner of drawing near: ﴿that﴾ meaning out of dislike for you to (p-233) ﴿return to something like it ever again﴾ meaning as long as you are worthy of hearing this saying; then He magnified this admonition and stirred the listener with His saying: ﴿if you are believers﴾ meaning characterized by faith, firmly established in it, then you will not return. If you return, then you are not truthful in your claim of being characterized by it.
