Then He explained the falsehood of the slanderers by saying, reproaching those who fabricated it and spread it, instructing those who urged him to think well: "Why did they not come?" meaning, the ones who are fabricating it first, "against him" if they are truthful, "with four witnesses" as has been established that slander is not permissible except with them.

And when it resulted from their not coming with the witnesses that they are lying, He said: "So when they did not come with the witnesses," meaning, the described ones, "then those are far from the truth" in the judgment of Allah, meaning, in the decree of the Most High King, and indeed, in this incident specifically in His knowledge, "they are the liars," meaning, the great lie, both outwardly and inwardly.
