Commentary
And when the most harmful of their times is the hour of death, and the state of loss, it is the time of lifting the veil from what has been decreed, and the meeting has come, and the descent or the ascent has become necessary. He followed that by mentioning it as a reminder to exert effort in supplication and humility for protection in it, saying, commenting with His words, the Most High: ﴿But they do not perceive﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 56] or with 'despairing,' indicating by the particle of purpose that He, glorified and exalted is He, extends their times as a means of leading them astray: ﴿Until﴾ or the estimation may be as the context guides: 'So I will not be among the disbelievers who obey the devils until ﴿when the time comes﴾.' He advanced the object to eliminate any doubt about its subject, saying: ﴿One of them is death﴾, so the veil was lifted from him, and the truth became apparent to him, and the flashes of punishment became evident to him, and there remained no doubt in any of that. ﴿He said﴾ addressing the angels of punishment in accordance with his ignorance and his standing with the tangible, like the habit of animals: ﴿My Lord, send me back﴾, meaning to the world, the abode of action; and it is permissible that the plural be for Allah, the Most High, and for the angels, or for the purpose of magnification in addressing the great ones, especially kings, or for the intention of repeating the action for emphasis.
