Commentary

And when He established the proof against their lies with the evidences of His greatness, and His exaltation above all that the wrongdoers say, and clarified to them the matter to the utmost clarity after He threatened them with a saying like His, and what they do not perceive, (until when We seized their luxurious ones with punishment) [Al-Mu'minun: 64] and similar to what He sent down upon the past ones, and made it lawful for the deniers. It was known that there is nothing after the warning except the execution of judgment and the infliction of calamity. It was possible for Him, glorified is He, to encompass the wrongdoer and others with His punishment, for He is not questioned about what He does. He commanded him to seek refuge from that, to manifest the greatness of lordship and the humility of servitude. So He said, (Say, My Lord) meaning, O You who are gracious to me, and emphasized the manifestation of the greatness of the one being called upon and informing about what the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, has of increased compassion for his nation, both the believers and the disbelievers. (If You should show me) meaning, if it is necessary that You show me before my death (what they are promised).
