Commentary
And when the focus of attention in this surah is creation and existence, and the warning to the people of obstinacy, it narrates that they said: "Indeed, we have been promised". He presents their saying: "We and our forefathers" before their saying: "This" meaning the resurrection "before" unlike the ants. For the focus of attention in it is belief in the Hereafter, therefore he presented his saying "this". What is meant is the promise of their forefathers on the tongues of those who came to them from the messengers, except that the news of its comprehensiveness made it a promise for all equally. Then they resumed their saying: "Indeed" meaning what "this is nothing but the legends of the ancients" meaning lies that have no truth to them, for that is the meaning of the confirmed denial.
