Commentary
Then he followed this evidence with support for it, what indicates that they do not traverse the path except out of necessity. He said: ﴿And indeed, We seized them﴾ meaning, by what We have of greatness ﴿with punishment﴾ meaning, absolutely, like the manifestation of the party of Allah against them in Badr and elsewhere. ﴿So they did not humble themselves﴾ meaning, they did not submit with a submission that is like their nature to ﴿their Lord﴾ who is gracious to them after the trial. The reality is that they did not seek to be for Him to honor the status of servitude with humiliation, submission, and compliance to His commands, leaving aside their own desires. The result is that when He struck them with punishment, it was their right to be for Him and not for their partners. Yet they did not act according to that necessity, neither in existence nor in seeking. ﴿And they do not supplicate﴾ meaning, they do not renew the supplication with submission, humiliation, and humility at all times, such that it becomes a habit for them. Rather, they are upon what they were created for of arrogance and tyranny, except when the two circles of the inner self meet, and they have no type of choice left for them, as indicated by what the particle of purpose guides to, that the estimation is: rather, they continued in their tyranny.
