Commentary
And when he finished with what may lead to the criticism of the saying or the speaker, he pointed to the obstinacy in the matter of the speaker, the saying, and the Messenger by his saying: ﴿Or do they say﴾ meaning after contemplating what he has brought and their failure to find in it any way of criticism ﴿against him﴾ meaning against their Messenger ﴿is madness﴾ meaning that he cannot be trusted because he may mix things up and bring forth something in which there is a criticism, even if the way of criticism in it is hidden at the time.
And when these categories are negated, especially the last one which is usually accompanied by the mixing that leads to falsehood, they are indeed the most knowledgeable of people regarding this noble Messenger, that he is the most complete in creation, the most honorable in character, the purest in traits, the greatest in resolve, the most sound in intellect, the best in opinion, and the most pleasing in speech, and the most correct in action. He turned away from that and said: ﴿But﴾ meaning they did not retreat upon hearing the verses and they did not gossip and abandon due to believing in something from what has passed, but rather they did that because this noble Messenger ﴿came to them with the truth﴾ which has no mixing in it whatsoever, and there is nothing more established than it or clearer than what is in it of monotheism and rulings. And indeed, he made that clear by challenging them with this book, so they were unable to respond. It is such that no fair-minded person is ignorant of it ﴿And most of them﴾ meaning while the case is that most of them ﴿are averse to the truth﴾ following (p-167) their vile desires and animalistic lusts obstinately, and some of them abandon it out of ignorance and imitation or fear of being said: he has turned away, and some of them follow it by the success from Allah and support.
