And when they were like animals, they did not fear destruction except at the time of witnessing it. Their deeds were solely for vile things. So He said: "Until when We seize their affluent ones," meaning with what We have of greatness, "those who are the leaders and chiefs, with punishment." Then it fell upon them, and their backs were weighed down by it, and their fronts were brought low by it. "When they all," meaning the affluent and those who followed them, "cry out," meaning they scream in humiliation, defeat, and panic without regard for nobility, not in arrogance. The essence of crying out is raising the voice in supplication - this is what al-Baghawi said.
