And when He affirmed for them pure faith, He negated from them amazement by His saying: ﴿And those who give what they give﴾, meaning they give what they have given of acts of obedience. Likewise, the reading of Yahya ibn al-Harith and others: they come with what they have come with, meaning they do what they have done of good deeds, so that the two readings agree in informing about them of their precedence. Then He mentioned their state and said: ﴿And their hearts are fearful﴾, meaning they are in a state of great fear. It has entered into their innermost being and roamed in every part of it because they know that they cannot measure Allah with His true measure, even if they strive. Then He explained that by saying: ﴿That they are returning to their Lord﴾, meaning the One whose kindness towards them is long-lasting, ﴿to be judged﴾ on the smallest and the largest, and He will reward them for every little and much, and He is the All-Aware and All-Seeing. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: The believer combines faith and fear, while the hypocrite combines wrongdoing and security.
