Commentary
And when it was known with certainty that the meaning is: So the prophets feared Allah, who sent them, and they undertook to bear the great burden with which they were sent. They called the servants to Him and intended to gather them upon Him. He expressed this with the conjunction of the cause in His saying, using the action of cutting off because it indicates separation: ﴿So they cut off﴾, meaning the nations. He implied them due to the clarity of their intention, for the verse that preceded it clearly stated that the prophets and those who were saved with them are one nation without any difference among them. Thus, it was known with certainty that the pronoun refers to the nations and those who arose after them. Therefore, the consideration of the matter which was one was more important, so He preceded His saying: ﴿Their matter﴾, meaning in religion after it had been united and connected ﴿among them﴾. They were factions, which is the meaning of ﴿pieces﴾, meaning each piece of them is in the utmost strength, unity, and steadfastness upon what it has turned to of desires and misguidance. With every faction, there is a way in misguidance from the path of the nations and the straight destination. (p-157) And a book they have written in their desires, and they did not have mercy on themselves by what the guides called them to of unity and togetherness, so they destroyed themselves with hatred and division. This is established as it is a second object for the cutting off, as has been explained regarding the prophets. It has clearly appeared, as you see, that this is an indication of those who were saved from the nation of every prophet after the destruction of their enemies. That is, this group whom I saved with you is your nation, while they are one nation agreeing in religion, with no difference among them. Just as your group is one, I am your Lord, and there is no Lord for you other than Me, so fear Me, and let none of you oppose My command, and do not differ and separate, lest I punish the disobedient among you as I punished your enemies.
And when this is something that no rational person would accept, it was responded to as if he said: Did they accept that despite the exposure of its harm? By His saying: ﴿Every faction﴾, meaning group ﴿is pleased with what they have﴾, meaning of misguidance and guidance ﴿they are happy﴾, meaning they are joyful, in addition to the fact that they are pleased, without the misguided among them turning to what the messengers brought of guidance, nor considering what befell their nations because of their denial leading to destruction.
