Commentary
And when the denial caused the rejection, destruction resulted from it. He said: ﴿So they denied both﴾ meaning Pharaoh and his people, Moses and Aaron, blessings and peace be upon them. ﴿So they were﴾ meaning Pharaoh and his people. He indicated by the passive form to the greatness of the power and said: ﴿Among the drowned﴾ by drowning them as a consequence of their denial. This indicates that they did not perish by their own choice without a chosen destruction, as evidenced by their drowning, all of them, by that which was the cause of the salvation of all the Children of Israel. Their strength in themselves did not avail them, then their strength specifically over the Children of Israel, by their enslavement of them. Nor did the weakness of the Children of Israel in their defense harm them, nor their humiliation and their smallness in their hands.
