Commentary

And when the decree was: So they did not believe and did not fear, the behavior of the people of Noah, he turned to his saying: ﴿And the elite said﴾ that is, the nobles whose vision fills the hearts. It is as if what is associated with the conjunction 'and' is greater in consolation than what is without it, based on the assumption of a question for the indication of this regarding what he turned to. And when the tribes had become distinct due to the diversity of tongues, he preceded his saying: ﴿from his people﴾ out of concern and specification for the conveying of consolation. And if he had delayed it, it would have been after the completion of the connection, which is long; then he clarified the elite by saying: ﴿those who disbelieved﴾ that is, they covered what they knew of the evidence of monotheism and the retribution against the polytheists ﴿and denied the meeting of the Hereafter﴾ for their denial of resurrection.

And when it was necessary for nobility to be luxury, he stated it as a reference to the fact that - due to the assumption of it being happiness in this world - it is usually a barrier to the happiness of the Hereafter, because it leads to arrogance, pride, and haughtiness even against the Benefactor. So he said: ﴿And We indulged them﴾ that is, while we - due to what we have and based on our greatness - granted them comfort ﴿in the worldly life﴾ that is, the lowly and despicable, with wealth, children, and abundance of joy. They addressed their followers: ﴿What is this﴾ they pointed to him in belittlement before those addressed ﴿except a human like you﴾ that is, in creation and condition; then they described him with what implies equality in every description, saying: ﴿He eats from what you eat from﴾ of the food of this world ﴿and drinks from what you drink﴾ that is, from its drink, so how can he be a messenger above you!
