Commentary
And when he presented that, because repelling evils by prohibiting what does not please is preferable to bringing about benefits, he followed it with the command to be grateful, saying: "So when you have settled" meaning when you have embarked, "you and those with you" meaning from among the humans and others, "on the ship" and you have finished complying with the command to board, "then say" because your knowledge of Allah is not like the knowledge of others, so your praise is complete. And when you say those with you followed you, then you are their example and they are in utmost obedience to you. For this reason, he specified the reward after the general condition of "praise" meaning the encompassing of the attributes of perfection in existence and non-existence, "for Allah" meaning the One who has no equal because He is the One who possesses the attributes of glory. "Who saved us" by carrying us in it "from the people" the fierce, tyrannical "wrongdoers" whose state—due to their placing things in other than their proper places—is like one who walks in darkness. So to You belongs the praise after their annihilation just as praise belonged to You in their initial existence and continuation. And the praise in this opening chapter is the greatest of all praises, for it is the first preservation, which is the prayer described with humility, like the praise in the chapter of the first creation: Al-An'am, by His saying, "So the end of the people who wronged was cut off, and praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds." [Al-An'am: 45]
