14Then We turned the sperm-drop into a clot, then We turned the clot into a fetus-lump, then We turned the fetus-lump into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh; thereafter We developed it into another creature. So, glorious is Allah, the Best of the creators.

Commentary

And when the turning of water into blood is a matter that is far beyond causation, and the sperm, which is the beginning of humanity, sometimes corrupts and takes on formation at other times, He expressed by creation what mixes it with what it acquires from the womb at the time of ripening. He coupled it with the tool of delay, saying: ﴿Then﴾ meaning after a delay in time and elevation in rank and greatness ﴿We created﴾ meaning with what we have of greatness ﴿the sperm﴾ meaning very white ﴿a clot﴾ red as blood, thick, solid, and of intense redness.

And when what comes after the clot from the ascending stages causes each one of them to be due to what preceded it by the decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing, who has chosen it without delay, and its causation is not from the habit that others can achieve, glorified is He, He expressed with the conjunction and creation, saying: ﴿So We created the clot as a piece of flesh﴾ meaning a small piece of flesh without any shape or outline ﴿So We created the piece of flesh﴾ by refining it and solidifying it with what we caused for it from warmth and subtle, mysterious matters ﴿bones﴾ from head and legs and what is between them ﴿So We clothed﴾ with what we have of the ability to create, those ﴿bones with flesh﴾ by what we generated from it, returning it to its state before being bones, so We covered those bones and strengthened them and reinforced them with ligaments and nerves.

And when the shaping and blowing of the spirit are of such majesty in any place, He indicated it by saying: ﴿Then We brought him into being﴾ meaning this being that is spoken of by our greatness ﴿a new creation﴾ meaning great, majestic, moving, speaking, disputing, and clear, very far from clay; Al-Razi said: The root of the letters n, sh, and hamzah indicates the elevation of something and its sublimity.

And when this detail of the development of man is a cause for glorifying the Creator: ﴿So blessed is﴾ meaning He established a stability that nothing has established, by possessing all the attributes of perfection, and He is free from any blemish of deficiency, so He was capable of everything, and if anything were to approach Him from incapacity, it would not be complete stability. Therefore, He said: ﴿Allah﴾ and He expressed with the proper name that encompasses all the beautiful names; and He pointed to the beauty of man by saying: ﴿the best of creators﴾ meaning of those who determine, meaning the measure of this wondrous creation, this measure, then He developed it through its stages from an infant, a strong youth, an active young man, a great elder, and an old man - to what is between that of affairs that only the Subtle, the All-Aware encompasses.
